MUMBAI, May 27, 2025: The Tamil Nadu government has declared that, Vietnamese automaker VinFast will soon launch VF6 & VF7, electric SUV’s built in India, from its greenfield plant in the port city of Thoothukudi.
Senior government officials told EV Story , 40% of planned EV investments in India have have been drawn to Thoothukudi, which the state government is positioning as a Manufacturing hub “ready to go global,” they emphasised.
VinFast intends to invest over $2 billion in the facility, with the first phase accounting for nearly $500 million of that total. This new facility, which was built in a record 15 months, is a significant achievement for the company added the senior government official who spoke to EV Story.
Tamil Nadu will launch the VinFast EV from its manufacturing facility, reaffirming its position as India’s EV capital. “The city will be responsible for over 40% of the country’s planned investments in electric vehicles, and the facility can produce 150,000 cars annually,” he confirmed.
Additionally, a supplier park will help the facility create a specialised EV ecosystem and create between 3,000 and 3,500 local jobs.
The company has committed to establishing battery manufacturing and EV charging stations nationwide under the V-Green brand to facilitate the growth of the EV ecosystem.
In its native country, VinFast presently operates two production facilities with a combined capacity of 150,000 units. This new facility will become one of the largest outside of Vietnam as it produces high-end all-electric SUVs designed for India, like the VF7 and VF6, a company official said
In order to make it easier to import necessary parts and export completed automobiles to markets in India and overseas, plans to establish shipping logistics and liner connectivity with Vietnam’s Port of Hai Phong have also been discussed.
According to company sources, VinFast has already started production and imported 2,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of components until the local ecosystem starts to take shape.
To facilitate the import of necessary parts and the export of completed automobiles, the site for this facility was chosen based on advantageous shipping logistics, senior company officials indicated
