CHENNAI, May 29, 2025: In collaboration with Southern Railways, Indo Fast Energy, a joint venture between Sun Mobility and the Indian Oil Corporation, has solidified plans to set up more than 45 battery swapping stations in Chennai.
These well-placed battery swapping stations at different Southern Railway station complexes will greatly increase last-mile mobility by allowing passengers to be transported straight from the railway stations to their destinations using battery-powered autorickshaws and two-wheelers.
“We’re proud to share a significant milestone in our journey to build a cleaner, smarter, and more connected India,” said Sachet Sabard, Deputy Manager of Energy Infrastructure Deployment. Indo Fast Energy plans to install more than forty-five battery swapping stations at railway-owned sites throughout the city with the steadfast assistance of Southern Railways’ Chennai Division, he said.
“These stations are not just infrastructure; they are enablers for everyday EV users, delivery partners, and the thousands of commuters who depend on the railways every day,” Sabard continued.
In order to create a seamless ecosystem wherever the city goes, Indo Fast plans to use its battery swapping technology to set up quick, simple, and accessible energy refuelling stations.
In the past, Indo Fast has collaborated with the railways. In the last week of March this year, the company successfully set up similar swapping stations in Bengaluru, which are KSR Bengaluru City, Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, Banaswadi, and Yelahanka. Each swapping station is equipped with 14 batteries, capable of serving 800 vehicles each day.
The railways benefit from this initiative, as it not only increases passenger convenience but also offers a sizable licence fee to permit Indo Fast Energy to operate. In total, Indo Fast runs more than 850 battery swapping stations in more than 22 Indian cities, enabling more than 1.2 million swaps every month.
