Bengaluru, May 19: Amazon India has announced plans to deploy around 1,000 electric trucks, developed in partnership with Eicher Trucks and Buses, the commercial vehicle division of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), to support the rapid expansion of its quick-commerce service, Amazon Now. The deployment is expected to become one of India’s largest dedicated electric truck fleets in the e-commerce and quick-commerce sectors, reinforcing Amazon’s commitment to building a more sustainable transportation network. The fleet will consist of custom-built Eicher Pro X electric trucks, specifically designed for high-frequency, intra-city operations. These compact vehicles will transport goods between Amazon’s fulfilment centres on city outskirts and micro-fulfilment centres (MFCs) located closer to customers. Amazon has already inducted around 50 Eicher Pro X trucks into its operations and plans to scale the fleet to over 1,000 units by 2028. The trucks are expected to cover 100 to 180 km daily, complete multiple trips, and recharge in approximately 50 minutes.
Initial deployment will begin in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Mumbai, supporting Amazon Now’s ultra-fast delivery service, which offers thousands of everyday essentials—including groceries, personal care products, electronics accessories and festive supplies—within minutes. The announcement comes shortly after Amazon revealed plans to expand Amazon Now to 100 cities across India, backed by a network of more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres. The service will soon reach cities such as Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangaluru and Visakhapatnam.

The planned deployment of approximately 1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is another significant step in that direction.”

Amazon and VECV have been working together since 2022 to develop electric trucks tailored for India’s e-commerce sector. In 2025, Amazon deployed over 100 electric trucks from multiple automakers across cities including Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.
Amazon has emerged as one of India’s largest corporate adopters of electric mobility, with more than 12,500 electric vehicles operating across 500-plus cities for both last-mile and middle-mile deliveries. Beyond transportation, Amazon continues to advance its sustainability agenda in India. The company currently operates around 53 wind and solar projects generating more than 1.1 GW of carbon-free energy. It also aims to replenish more water to communities than it consumes by 2027 and has helped over one million people gain access to clean water and sanitation since 2020. These efforts contribute to Amazon’s commitment under The Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. Through the initiative, Amazon also supported the LaneShift programme, which piloted electric trucks on the Bengaluru–Chennai corridor to create India’s first evidence-based roadmap for zero-emission long-haul freight transport.
