Johannesburg, August 20, 2025: In a decisive return to a familiar terrain, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) makes a bold comeback to South Africa’s passenger vehicle market after a six‑year hiatus. Having exited in 2019 amid mixed consumer response to earlier models like the Indica and Vista, Tata now re‑enters with renewed clarity, stronger products, and a reinvigorated strategy. Partnering with Motus Holdings, South Africa’s leading automotive group, the company today unveiled four new models at Sandton’s The Galleria: Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago. This re‑entry is shaped by hard‑earned lessons, and signals a fresh era grounded in deeper market understanding and a commitment to quality, safety, and customer-first ownership.

The relaunch is supported by a strategic alliance with Motus Holdings, South Africa’s largest automotive group, known for its robust distribution, retail, and aftersales infrastructure. TMPV will initially operate through a network of 40 dealerships, expanding to 60 by 2026, ensuring widespread accessibility and premium customer service.

The timing of this return reflects TMPV’s momentum in India, where it has seen a 350% increase in passenger vehicle sales, growing from 170,000 units in 2020 to over 560,000 in 2025. Tata Motors, a pioneer of safety innovation in India, brings this same focus to South Africa, with every vehicle model rated 4 or 5 stars by global and Indian safety standards like Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “Our return to South Africa marks a significant milestone in Tata Motors’ global journey. We are excited to bring our new-generation of vehicles engineered with cutting-edge technology, uncompromising safety, and modern design to a market that values safety, quality and innovation. With Motus as our preferred partner, we are confident in delivering a superior ownership experience that resonates with South African consumers and contributes meaningfully to the local economy.”

Ockert Janse Van Rensburg, Group CEO, Motus Holdings, added, “We are proud to partner with Tata Motors in reintroducing their acclaimed passenger vehicle range to South Africa. With our deep-rooted expertise in distribution, retail, and aftersales, and Tata’s proven track record in engineering and innovation, we are poised to offer customers choice of new age vehicles with a compelling value proposition. This collaboration is not just about vehicle it’s about building trust, delivering excellence, and shaping the future of mobility in South Africa.”

New Model Lineup Targets Every Segment of South African Market

Each of the four models is meticulously crafted to cater to distinct customer needs and lifestyles. The Harrier is a full-sized sport utility vehicle that combines commanding road presence with advanced performance. Powered by a refined 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, it features modern conveniences like a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems for enhanced safety, multiple terrain response modes, and voice-enabled dual-zone climate control to deliver comfort in every journey.

The Curvv stands out with its coupe-inspired, aerodynamic design and sporty appeal. It runs on a responsive 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and offers tech-forward interiors, including a fully digital instrument cluster and customizable mood lighting that elevates the driving experience for those who value style and innovation.

For urban lifestyles, the Punch compact SUV offers a blend of bold character and practical design. It boasts high safety standards with features like Electronic Stability Program and wide-opening 90-degree doors for easy access. Drive modes allow for tailored performance, while technology such as a floating 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system keeps drivers connected and entertained.

Finally, the Tiago hatchback is designed as a stylish and efficient city companion. Equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, it provides options of a 7- or 10.25-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, wireless connectivity, and advanced safety features. The Tiago’s compact size and modern tech make it ideal for first-time car buyers or those seeking smart urban mobility.

Forging the Road ahead in South Africa

TMPV aims not just to sell cars, but to build a strong economic and social footprint. The company has committed to investing in skills development, job creation, and technical training, while also working with financial partners to offer competitive financing options, making high-quality mobility more accessible to South African buyers.

This re-entry is more than a relaunch, it’s a comeback grounded in trust, product excellence, and a clear understanding of market dynamics. Tata Motors is not just returning to South Africa; it is returning with purpose, with a product line that reflects its evolution and readiness to serve a market that values reliability, innovation, and value. Tata Motors’ global ambitions are rooted in decades of engineering excellence, but its future lies in strong local partnerships and meaningful customer relationships. With Motus Holdings by its side, and a bold new product range leading the charge, Tata Motors is prepared not only to rebuild its presence but to lead, inspire, and grow in South Africa. This is not a restart—it’s a reinvention, driven by trust and powered by purpose.
