MUMBAI, 7th September, 2025: In a move that signals Mumbai’s growing commitment to sustainable urban mobility, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking has flagged off the first four electric buses under its collaboration with PMI Electro Mobility.
The new 12-metre buses are part of a 250-vehicle rollout that will gradually transform the city’s public transport system into a cleaner, more efficient service.
This landmark event, held at the BEST Colaba Depot, was attended by Ashish Sharma, General Manager, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, who officially flagged off the electric buses.
Operating from the Oshiwara Depot, the new buses will serve high-demand routes across the city, ensuring maximum accessibility and impact from day one.
The fully electric buses, manufactured by PMI Electro Mobility, reflect a practical and forward-looking approach to modern public transport. With seating capacity for 36 passengers plus a driver, each bus features a low-floor design of 400 millimetres to support easy boarding, especially for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers. Provisions for wheelchair access and three foldable seats provide further adaptability and comfort. Powered by a 366.66 kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery, the buses can travel up to 250 kilometres on a single charge. A permanent magnet synchronous motor drives smooth and efficient operations, supporting both long daily routes and frequent start-stop conditions typical of Mumbai traffic.
This launch is more than just a product deployment. It marks the beginning of a wider transformation for India’s public transport ecosystem. Electric vehicles are no longer experimental. They are ready, reliable, and rolling out across the country in growing numbers. PMI Electro Mobility has already deployed more than 2,700 electric buses across 31 cities in India, from the mountainous terrains of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh to the coastal networks of Kerala, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa.
Aanchal Jain, Chief Executive Officer, PMI Electro Mobility, said, “We are grateful to BEST for this opportunity to partner in their progressive vision for Mumbai’s public transport. This launch reflects the city’s strong commitment towards sustainable mobility, and we are proud to play a small role in supporting this journey. Together, we look forward to contributing to Mumbai’s greener and cleaner future. Delivering these buses ahead of schedule is a testament to what can be achieved when authorities and industry work hand in hand. We sincerely appreciate the trust placed in us and remain committed to supporting India’s journey toward sustainable and future-ready public transport.”
Electric mobility is fast becoming one of the most promising sectors in India. As cities face mounting pressure to reduce emissions, cut noise, and modernize their public fleets, electric buses are emerging as the ideal solution. They reach the masses daily and seamlessly, quietly changing the face of urban commute. With state-of-the-art battery and motor technology, flexible passenger features, and growing public-private partnerships, the electric bus industry is on track to become one of the most transformative forces in the future of Indian infrastructure.
As more cities follow Mumbai’s lead, the road ahead for electric mobility in India looks not only promising but unstoppable.
