MUMBAI, 11th February 2026. India’s electric three-wheeler market is heading toward 850,000 units in FY2026 — but the real story isn’t just growth. It’s the tightening duel at the top.
Just yesterday, Bajaj Auto launched a 296-km range electric three-wheeler, now the longest-range offering in the segment. On Thursday, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility is preparing its response from GIFT City, Hyderabad.
For the first time in years, leadership in India’s fastest-growing vehicle segment is being contested in real-time.
Bajaj Takes the Monthly Lead
Bajaj’s WEGO P9018 carries a 17.7 kWh battery, delivering a certified 296 km range — the longest in the segment. Priced at ₹4.41 lakh (ex-showroom), the vehicle includes regenerative braking, an upgraded battery management system, a two-speed transmission, and 36% gradability. A five-year warranty backs what is clearly designed as a high-earning passenger hauler.
The product escalation aligns with rising volume momentum. In January 2026, Bajaj sold 8,510 units to Mahindra’s 7,492 — its third monthly win in four months. The cumulative fiscal tally through January still favours Mahindra at 84,693 units (12% share), versus Bajaj’s 71,821 (10% share). But the roughly 13,000-unit gap has narrowed meaningfully over the past year as monthly leadership flips with increasing frequency.
Bajaj entered the electric three-wheeler segment only in mid-2023. Since then, it has climbed 11 ranks to secure the No. 2 position — one of the fastest ascents in India’s EV landscape.
Momentum, however, is not the same as incumbency.
Mahindra Readies Its Counter
Mahindra remains the fiscal leader, anchored by its Treo series spanning 110–150 km variants across passenger and cargo applications. Its strength lies not just in product range, but in rural penetration, service depth and financing networks built over decades in the three-wheeler business.
The company demonstrated that muscle in November 2025, when it posted 10,786 units—up 51% year-on-year — after Bajaj’s earlier monthly advances. Industry expectations suggest Mahindra’s upcoming GIFT City platform could feature higher-range Treo upgrades, enhanced connectivity and fleet-focused financing structures aimed at reinforcing ecosystem loyalty.
If Bajaj is pushing the performance frontier, Mahindra appears ready to defend its moat.
Market Tilts Towards Organised Leaders
The broader market shift explains why the fight has intensified. Passenger electric three-wheeler penetration reached 35.85% in Q3 FY26, up sharply from 21.3% last year. Cargo penetration remains steady between 20% and 23%. Charging infrastructure has expanded to roughly 30,000 stations nationwide, easing range anxiety and supporting higher-capacity vehicles.
Government incentives under PM E-Drive and aggressive OEM financing have steadily shifted operators toward organised players, compressing the unorganised segment’s share.
Challengers remain active but distant. TVS ranked No. 4 in January with a 4.34% share and 77% year-on-year growth. Piaggio holds No. 2 overall in the broader three-wheeler market at 6.72% share, though its EV passenger sales declined 40% year-on-year. Omega Seiki continues to grow in cargo L5, while Montra maintains a niche outside the top five.
Yet in electric passenger three-wheelers, scale and distribution have concentrated power. The battlefield has effectively narrowed to two.
Q4 Will Decide the Fiscal Crown
With two months remaining until March 31, fourth-quarter volumes will determine whether Mahindra’s cumulative lead holds or whether Bajaj’s recent momentum translates into a deeper structural shift.
Q4 will not just settle a leaderboard. It could redraw the hierarchy of India’s last-mile economy. If Bajaj converts momentum into sustained volume, the balance of power shifts. If Mahindra absorbs the assault and widens the gap, incumbency hardens into dominance.
Either way, the era of fragmentation is over. In India’s 850,000-unit electric three-wheeler market, there is room at the top for one undisputed leader — and the fight is entering its final rounds.
