INDIA: 5th November 2025: Even as India’s small car market slows due to rising incomes and a shift towards SUVs, Maruti Suzuki’s Alto remains the country’s most popular vehicle. The entry-level hatchback has sold over 4.7 million units, making it the best-selling model as Maruti Suzuki celebrates 30 million domestic sales, a record unmatched by any other carmaker in India.
The company reached this milestone after 42 years of operation, having delivered its first Maruti 800 to a customer in December 1983. Maruti Suzuki achieved its first ten million cumulative sales in 28 years and two months, the second ten million in 7 years and five months, and the most recent ten million in only six years and four months. This progression reflects its broad market reach and long-standing customer trust.
Following the Alto in sales, the Wagon R has surpassed 3.4 million units, while the Swift has sold more than 3.2 million units. Compact SUVs such as the Brezza and crossover Fronx have also entered the top ten most sold models, demonstrating Maruti’s growing presence in the SUV segment while maintaining its small car legacy.
This achievement comes at a time when entry-level hatchback sales have plateaued due to stricter emission and safety standards, rising ownership costs, and a shifting consumer preference for larger, more feature-rich vehicles. Small cars, once the backbone of India’s passenger vehicle market, have seen their share fall from nearly half a decade ago to less than a third today.

Nonetheless, the Alto’s consistent appeal in India’s rural areas demonstrates the resilience of budget mobility, according to a top industry analyst, who exclaimed, “The Alto remains symbolic of India’s first step into car ownership.” Even as premium models gain popularity, the brand remains popular among first-time buyers in small towns.
Maruti Suzuki currently offers 19 models across more than 170 variants, encompassing a range of powertrain and transmission options.
Commemorating this milestone, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said:
“When I consider the vastness of India and think that 30 million customers have placed their trust in Maruti Suzuki to realise their dream of mobility, it fills me with humility and gratitude. Yet, with car ownership at approximately 33 vehicles per 1,000 people, we know our journey is far from over. We will continue to make every effort to bring the joy of mobility to as many people as possible while also being a positive asset for both the economy and the environment.”
This milestone is significant for Maruti Suzuki because it reinforces the company’s unrivalled scale and reach in India. Competitors such as Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra have grown significantly in recent years, particularly in SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs), but none have come close to matching Maruti’s total sales volume or penetration across regions.
The 30 million mark demonstrates Maruti’s decades-long dominance, which is based on affordability, trust, and extensive service reach—qualities that continue to solidify its position even as the market shifts towards premium offerings and electrification.
