New Delhi, 28th August 2025: India’s capital city is reinforcing its position as India’s leading electric bus city, with SWITCH Mobility, part of the Hinduja Group, flagging off the first batch of its SWITCH EiV12 low-floor electric buses for the Department of Transport. The deployment is the first tranche of a landmark 950-unit order awarded under the CESL tender, marking a significant milestone in the capital’s push toward sustainable urban mobility.
The launch, flagged off by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and attended by senior government officials and SWITCH executives, highlights the city’s commitment to reducing emissions while enhancing commuter experience. The 12-metre buses, manufactured at SWITCH’s state-of-the-art Indian facility, are designed to navigate Delhi’s bustling streets with comfort, safety, and efficiency. Each vehicle seats 39 passengers and features a wheelchair ramp, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, and GPS tracking.
RG Venkataraman, Chief Commercial Officer of SWITCH Mobility, said, “We are proud to commence delivery of our SWITCH EiV12 electric buses to Delhi. These buses, engineered with advanced global technology and manufactured with pride in India, will significantly enhance public transport while contributing to cleaner air and improved quality of life for millions of commuters.”
Beyond passenger comfort, the buses integrate advanced technology for operational efficiency. Powered by SWITCH iON, the proprietary telematics system, fleet managers can track real-time vehicle health, optimise routes, and monitor performance. The rear-end dual-gun charging interface enables rapid recharging, while floor-mounted LFP batteries lower the centre of gravity, ensuring stability and safety.
Delhi’s government has steadily expanded its EV fleet over recent years, making the city home to the largest number of electric buses in India. The SWITCH EiV12 rollout is expected to sharply cut CO₂ emissions and improve air quality in a city grappling with severe pollution. Experts say this scale of deployment positions Delhi as a benchmark for other Indian metros planning large-scale EV integration.
For SWITCH Mobility, the project aligns with its “Make in India for the World” ethos, combining global engineering expertise—leveraging Ashok Leyland’s legacy—with localised production. Since its inception, SWITCH has put over 1,250 e-buses on roads worldwide, clocking more than 150 million kilometres, alongside over 1,000 electric light commercial vehicles, transforming last-mile logistics.
As Indian cities increasingly prioritise sustainability and smart urban mobility, SWITCH Mobility’s EiV12 buses could serve as a template for scaling clean transportation infrastructure, bridging technology, local manufacturing, and operational efficiency in one package. Delhi’s streets may soon be quieter, cleaner, and decidedly greener.
