Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), part of the Murugappa Group, has inaugurated a cutting-edge electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana, as it aims to leverage the PM E-Drive Scheme’s production-linked incentives to boost India’s sustainable logistics sector.
With an annual capacity of 6,000 e-trucks—scalable to 7,500 units—the 255,000 sq. ft. plant is packed with advanced innovations: India’s first all-women, fully automated battery production unit, 60% robotics integration, and end-to-end Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing.
The facility is highly flexible, featuring modular lines capable of producing the Rhino EV series and other future models, with in-house battery assembly at 1.7 GWh and extensive quality testing labs. Approximately 74% of components are sourced locally (excluding imported cells), aligning Montra Electric to qualify for the PM E-Drive and other state incentives as it ramps up production and localization.
“This facility combines scale, flexibility, and world-class quality, with modular lines capable of producing multiple variants and advanced digital manufacturing tools. By fostering inclusivity through our all-women battery line and driving high localisation, we are setting new benchmarks for innovation, employment and green mobility,” said P.V. Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer, Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech).
In addition to cutting-edge automation, the Manesar facility houses on-site charging, battery recycling, skilling and environmental programs, supporting Montra’s community and sustainability focus. Analysts expect that PLI benefits and localized manufacturing will lower costs, boost domestic capability, and position Montra Electric as a leader in clean freight solutions as India’s commercial EV market accelerates.
