INDIA,25th September 2025: Olectra Greentech, which has recently faced challenges, particularly with delivery delays in its contract with the Maharashtra government, raising concerns about its execution capabilities during a time when demand for electric buses stands to make a significant rise in business transformation with the appointment of Mahesh Babu Subramanian as Managing Director.
Few executives understand India’s electric bus industry as well as Babu. At SWITCH Mobility, the electric vehicle arm of Ashok Leyland, he played a crucial role in developing the company’s electric bus portfolio and global strategy. His previous experience at Mahindra Electric provided him with valuable insights into building India’s EV ecosystem, including passenger vehicles, fleet electrification, and public transport initiatives.
Olectra’s immediate challenge is to efficiently convert its substantial order book into timely deliveries while ramping up manufacturing and reassuring state transport agencies of its reliability. Babu’s strong reputation for navigating complex procurement cycles, establishing global partnerships, and addressing scale-up challenges aligns perfectly with these needs.
Additionally, he is recognized for integrating technological innovations, from advanced battery platforms to digital fleet management, into commercial strategies. This capability will be essential as Olectra contends with fierce competition from Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland’s SWITCH.
His close connections with government EV forums and recognition within the industry further position him as a key player in shaping policy, fostering strategic alliances, and facilitating access to global capital.
In related developments, the board has approved the reappointment of Chintalapudi Laksmi Kumari as Independent Director for a new five-year term beginning January 9, 2026. With nearly four decades of experience in civil, criminal, constitutional, and arbitration law, Kumari enhances the board’s governance capabilities.
The company also restructured its key committees effective September 28, 2025, establishing Babu as Managing Director, alongside P. Rajesh Reddy as Whole Time Director, B. Sharat Chandra as Chief Financial Officer, and P. Hanuman Prasad as Vice President—Company Secretary and Head of Legal.
If leveraged effectively, the management changes along with Babu’s leadership could help Olectra transcend its image as an early mover hindered by execution issues and position it as a reliable partner in India’s transition to sustainable public mobility.
This shift could restore Olectra’s confidence, which may have made a dent into the investors, policymakers, and transport authorities at a critical juncture for the country’s electric transport initiatives.
