Tata’s Harrier EV braces up to touching 25,000 Sales by March 26

From early-mover to fast-follower: Tata’s Harrier EV shows it can win at the premium end. The question is—can it stay ahead as Mahindra and MG scale faster?

As Tata Harrier EV Nears 25,000 Milestone Amid Rival Surge

Mumbai, January 6, 2026: India’s electric-vehicle market has shifted into a higher gear, with passenger EV sales surging 86% in 2025 to claim about 4–5% of all car sales. What was once a niche has become a battleground, with Tata Motors’ Harrier EV sitting squarely at its centre.

Top company officials are confident that Harrier EV sales will cross 25,000 units by March 2026, marking Tata’s first clear success at the higher end of the EV market.

The Harrier EV, which company officials note has a monthly production capacity of 2500 units, has sold in excess of 15,000 units so far, and the premium electric SUV has emerged as both a milestone and a stress test for the country’s EV pioneer.

This raises a harder question: can Tata turn one standout product into a repeatable premium strategy in a market where rivals are no longer playing catch-up?

Industry data underline the speed of change. While December retail softened due to inventory correction and cautious year-end buying, full-year numbers show clear momentum. EVs accounted for roughly 4.4% of India’s passenger market by the end of 2025, with growth concentrated in mid- and premium-SUV segments.

Electric passenger vehicle sales in India touched an all-time high of over 1.76 lakh units in 2025, a 77 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase. Strong demand across mass-market SUVs and MPVs, along with several new launches, drove the growth, even as competition intensified.

Tata Motors retained its position as India’s largest EV carmaker in 2025, selling 69,955 units, up 13 per cent YoY. Still, its market share fell sharply to 40 per cent, down from 62 per cent in 2024 and 73 per cent in 2023 amid intensifying competition from Mahindra and MG.

“Tata is the overall EV leader, supported by steady Nexon volumes and the Harrier EV’s strong launch,” said an auto industry analyst. “But Mahindra and MG are scaling faster in specific pockets. MG’s Windsor has momentum, though it will need new models to sustain volumes, while Mahindra’s born-electric line-up is finding early resonance.”

A Shift Upmarket
Introduced in mid-2025, the Harrier EV is averaging nearly 3,000 a month. Waiting periods of 16–25 weeks suggest demand remains firm, putting Tata on track to cross the 25,000-unit milestone before the fiscal year ends.

More importantly, the Harrier EV signals a strategic shift. For much of the past five years, Tata’s EV dominance rested on early-mover advantage and ICE-derived mass-market models such as the Nexon and Tiago cars that built scale but offered limited differentiation once rivals arrived with clean-sheet platforms.

In November, the Harrier EV outsold the Nexon EV for the first time, a symbolic inflexion point in Tata’s electric journey. Dealers say demand skews toward the top-spec 75 kWh variant, with buyers treating the Harrier as a primary, long-distance SUV rather than a city commuter. Diesel Harrier cannibalisation appears limited, with many customers upgrading from smaller EVs or switching from rival brands.

Even as Tata’s EV market share has slid from over 70% in early 2024 to around 35–40% by mid-2025, its electric business turned profitable for the first time in five years—a sign of a deliberate pivot from volume chasing to margin discipline.

Rivals Move Faster
Tata’s progress, however, faces an unforgiving backdrop. Mahindra’s BE.6 and XEV 9e, both built on dedicated EV platforms, sold a combined 23,782 units between June and November, averaging close to 4,000 a month. MG Motor’s Windsor EV moved even faster, clocking 25,829 units in the same period.

If current trends continue, Mahindra’s pair could reach 40,000 units by March, while the Windsor may cross 43,000, underscoring how quickly India’s mid-premium EV SUV segment has scaled.

Each player is taking a distinct path. MG leans on affordability and experimentation, including its battery-as-a-service model. Mahindra is targeting younger buyers with striking designs and platform-native EVs. Tata, by contrast, is betting on depth, range, size, and all-around capability, rather than price disruption or design theatrics.

Product Over Price
The Harrier EV reflects that philosophy. Tata’s first all-wheel-drive electric SUV—branded Quad Wheel Drive—uses a 75 kWh battery with an ARAI-rated range of 627 km. Priced from ₹21.49 lakh (ex-showroom), it competes directly with Mahindra’s XEV 9e and BYD’s Atto 3.

Inside, large-format displays, Level 2 ADAS, and vehicle-to-load charging target buyers who prize range confidence, cabin space, and highway composure over headline pricing. Dealers say those traits are connecting—at least for now.

Rivals, though, are compressing product cycles and advancing new architectures at speed, narrowing any advantage Tata holds from depth alone.

The Bigger Question
For Tata Motors, the Harrier EV is doing exactly what it needs to: restore relevance at the premium end and buy time as the company prepares its broader reset with models such as the Sierra. ev and the yet-to-arrive Avinya range.

The tougher test lies ahead: can Tata repeat the Harrier’s success across multiple premium nameplates in a market where Mahindra and MG are scaling faster and experimenting more aggressively?

In India’s fast-evolving EV race, one breakout model can shift momentum. Whether Tata can turn that momentum into a franchise will determine if it remains the market’s anchor or emerges as a strong contender in a field it once defined.
