New Delhi , 6 March 2026   February 2026 proved to be a landmark month for India’s auto retail industry, delivering one of the strongest performances in recent years and setting a new benchmark for the month. Total vehicle retail sales reached 24,09,362 units, registering a robust 25.62% year-on-year growth, underscoring the strength of underlying demand across both urban and rural markets. The month’s performance was significantly influenced by the positive tailwinds from GST 2.0, which improved affordability and boosted consumer confidence, while a more synchronized alignment between wholesale dispatches and retail sales further supported market stability. Despite February being a shorter month, the sector maintained exceptional momentum, highlighting the depth and resilience of demand across multiple vehicle segments.

February 2026 Auto Retail Performance
Segment Retail Units (Feb 2026) YoY Growth Share of Total Retail
Overall Retail 24,09,362 +25.62% 100%
2W (Two-Wheelers) 17,00,505 +25.02% 70.6%
PV (Passenger Vehicles) 3,94,768 +26.12% 16.4%
CV (Commercial Vehicles) 1,00,820 +28.89% 4.2%
3W (Three-Wheelers) 1,17,130 +24.39% 4.9%
Tractors 89,418 +36.35% 3.7%
CE (Construction Equipment) 6,721 -1.22% 0.3%

Segment-wise performance reflected broad-based growth across the industry. Two-wheelers (2W), which remain the backbone of India’s mobility market, recorded retail sales of 17,00,505 units, reflecting a 25.02% year-on-year increase. Passenger vehicles (PV) followed with 3,94,768 units, marking a 26.12% YoY rise, supported by strong demand for SUVs and a gradual revival in entry-level and compact car segments. Commercial vehicles (CV) showed even stronger growth momentum, with 1,00,820 units sold, translating to a 28.89% YoY increase, reflecting improved freight movement, infrastructure-led demand, and continued expansion of logistics and e-commerce activities. Three-wheelers (3W) recorded 1,17,130 units, growing 24.39% YoY, supported by improved last-mile mobility demand and recovery in small business activity. The tractor segment emerged as the fastest-growing category, with sales of 89,418 units, registering an impressive 36.35% YoY growth, largely driven by healthy rural sentiment, favorable agricultural prospects, and improving farm incomes. The only category to record a slight decline was construction equipment , which reported 6,721 units, reflecting a marginal 1.22% YoY contraction, likely due to project execution cycles and base effects.

February 2026 also set a new record as the best-ever February for several key categories including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, tractors, and overall vehicle retail, reinforcing the strength of the current demand cycle. The continued momentum after GST 2.0 suggests that policy-led improvements in affordability and taxation clarity have started translating into tangible retail growth across the industry. Importantly, this growth was not concentrated in a single segment but was visible across categories, indicating healthy underlying consumption rather than a short-term spike.

A closer look at demand patterns shows strong participation from both urban and rural markets, though rural markets played an especially significant role in driving growth during the month. In the two-wheeler segment, urban demand expanded 28.96% YoY, while rural markets recorded 22.16% YoY growth, indicating widespread mobility demand and improved purchasing sentiment. In passenger vehicles, rural demand grew at an even faster pace of 34.21% YoY, significantly outpacing the 21.12% YoY growth in urban markets. This trend signals a meaningful rural recovery and improved income sentiment, which has also supported demand for smaller and more affordable cars. At the same time, the SUV segment continues to dominate PV sales, reflecting consumers’ ongoing preference for larger vehicles offering higher ground clearance, advanced features, and perceived value.

The commercial vehicle segment maintained strong traction, supported by steady freight movement, continued infrastructure spending, and expanding e-commerce logistics networks. Fleet operators have been gradually increasing capacity as economic activity strengthens, while replacement demand also remains healthy. Meanwhile, the tractor segment’s sharp growth of 36.35% reflects robust agricultural sentiment, supported by favorable crop cycles, improved rural liquidity, and government support measures for the farming sector.

Another positive indicator during the month was the improvement in passenger vehicle inventory levels, which declined further to 27–29 days. This represents progress toward FADA’s recommended benchmark of 21 days, suggesting a healthier balance between manufacturer dispatches and dealer-level retail demand. Improved inventory alignment reduces pressure on dealer working capital and contributes to a more sustainable retail environment for the industry.

Looking ahead to March 2026, dealer sentiment remains largely positive. According to the latest survey, 75.51% of dealers expect sales growth, while only 4.59% foresee a decline. Demand during the month is likely to be supported by festival-related purchases as well as financial year-end buying, which traditionally drives vehicle registrations as customers seek to complete purchases before the close of the fiscal year. However, despite the strong momentum, industry participants remain cautiously optimistic given broader economic uncertainties and evolving demand dynamics.

The three-month outlook from March to May 2026 reflects slightly more moderated expectations compared with previous surveys. Around 67.35% of dealers expect growth during this period, which, although still positive, indicates that expectations are becoming more balanced. This suggests that the market may be gradually transitioning from the sharp rebound phase seen in recent months toward a more stable and sustainable growth trajectory. Overall industry sentiment therefore remains measured yet cautiously optimistic, with stakeholders expecting steady expansion rather than unusually rapid growth in the coming months.

Taken together, February 2026 highlights a period of strong and broad-based recovery in India’s automotive retail market. The combination of supportive policy measures, improving rural demand, healthier inventory alignment, and sustained consumer confidence has created favorable conditions for the sector. While growth may moderate slightly as the market stabilizes, the underlying fundamentals suggest that the auto retail industry is entering a more balanced phase of consistent and sustainable expansion.
