The Faster Adoption for Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME II) initiative, launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has incentivized the adoption of 1,615,080 electric vehicles over five years beginning April 1, 2019, with a total financial backing of Rs 11,500 crore, according to the most recent government estimates.
The FAME II initiative successfully promoted the sale of 1,615,080 electric vehicles (EVs). The Ministry of Heavy Industries launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME II) scheme, which will operate for five years beginning April 1, 2019, with a total budget allocation of ₹11,500 crore.
According to the scheme’s data, incentives were provided for 1,428,009 electric two-wheelers, 164,523 electric three-wheelers, and approximately 22,548 electric four-wheelers, totaling over 1.9 million EV registrations, up from 1.5 million in 2023.
Senior government officials reported that the FAME II scheme facilitated the approval of 7,400 electric buses, with 6,862 of these allocated to various cities, state transportation undertakings, and government entities for intra-city operations. As of February 28, 2025, 5,135 electric buses had been delivered.
In March 2023, the Ministry of Heavy Industries allocated ₹800 crore to three oil marketing companies—Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL)—to establish 7,432 public charging stations at retail outlets nationwide.
Moreover, in March 2024, an extra Rs 73.50 crore was approved for the upgrade of 980 public charging stations. Furthermore, 400 additional charging stations have been approved through an Expression of Interest (EOI) to entities from various states.
